No-exam life insurance

Who qualifies for fast underwriting, how the process works, and what occurs if you don't qualify.

Many insurers today offer rapid underwriting: for applicants within certain parameters, they reach a decision using your answers, prior prescription records, driving history, and other data, skipping a physical exam. Some approvals are issued the same business day. Each quote on this page notes whether an exam is required, may be needed, or is waived for that option.

What it changes

Skipping the medical exam is not the same as skipping underwriting. Your responses are checked, and a policy issued based on untrue information can be disputed during the initial two years. If the carrier's investigation uncovers issues, it may request an exam or blood tests; at that stage, you can decide whether to continue.

Who tends to qualify

Typically candidates under approximately age 60 applying for coverage up to the carrier's no-exam threshold, with no serious health history and no tobacco use within the past twelve months or more. Some carriers will substitute recent lab work from your doctor in place of an exam.

If an exam is necessary, it's ordinarily a quick 20- to 30-minute meeting with a paramedic who comes to your home or office in the Calexico area at zero cost to you. Health exam outcomes often move applicants up to a better rate class—improving their quoted rate. An exam is not automatically a disadvantage.
